walleye for warriors
Last weekend was the second annual Walleye for Warriors event on Saginawbay out of Bay City Veterans Park. There were 91 boats taking 191 Veterans out fishing. The oldest Vet was I believe 93 ( not sure as I was cleaning fish at the time). A great time was had by all. I was part of the volunteers group. Day one was a meet and greet with boat Captains and Vets. Day two the start of the fishing day. They were escorted out the river by the Coast Guard out to Saginawbay. In the afternoon everyone was due back at the ramp. Again the Coast Guard and a Blackhawk helicopter escorted them back in. Pretty cool seeing Vets holding up walleye as they headed towards the ramp! Awards for biggest fish were handed out, with alot of other prizes. A couple stories from some of the Vets and then the pig roast. We had about 10 folks filleting fish once we got jammed up. ( we started with 3 of us). Over 1000 walleyes were brought in for us to clean. We ended up with 352 lbs of fillets that were split up and given to the Vets in donated coolers with ice for them to take home. Quite the event. In a few days photos and videos should be up on their site from 2012 ( still shows 2011). After the many thanks from the Vets, I sure hope you guys who hope to start this in Ohio can get it going. It really means alot to all the Vets. A few of the Vets were POW’s, one guy was for 22 mths. It took alot of volunteers to help get this thing done and ALOT of sponsors.
Here’s some posts from another website with stories etc.
